
The image above shows a comparison of the original levels to the new after I implemented a significant visual update for Thunder Barrels.
The update included but isn’t limited to:
- An enhanced masking shader to provide the darkness that blankets unlit objects in the scene.
- A graphical overhaul of major objects used in scenes, such as trees, walls and major items (crates, arrows, etc)
- Layered shadow effects on “tall” objects to give the illusion of depth
These techniques has facilitated the lighting of 2D scenes, allowing for a new level of graphical detail, as well as providing new ways to draw player attention to key items and aspects of a level.
