Solar panel rooftop cable setup and testing in VR.

VR Solar Panel Installation Training is a training experience built in Unity for the client Immersify.

The application is built for the Pico Neo 2 headset and integrates with the Snobal Cloud platform for online content delivery and reporting of user results. The VR training course is voiced using text-to-speech services to convert scripts to audio files.

The training course covers four main parts of solar panel installation, these include:

  • Roof-top panel assembly
  • Roof-top panel cable setup
  • Interior inverter, battery and circuit breaker setup
  • Solar system testing and initial power-on of solar panel system
Assembled Panels on the rooftop.

For this project I was responsible for developing the VR course content in Unity. This included:

  • Creating the main game state system
  • Importing and setting up art assets
  • Creating systems for picking up and placing objects
  • Creating cable connection systems with grab and place affordance systems
  • Creating usable VR tools and interaction points such as wrenches, drills and volt-meters

Building and designing the virtual interactions with the solar equipment and tools in a way that was intuitive for new users was a major challenge in this project. This involved designing simple and reactive affordances for interactions to help streamline tasks alongside a large amount of iteration and play-testing with naïve users with little to no virtual reality experience.
